Updates and Reminders

Updates and Reminders

Math:

Dear Parents,

For the next two weeks, your child will be learning about 2-D shapes. The goals will

be for your child to use shapes to make other shapes, to identify shapes that are

congruent (the same size and shape), and to recognize symmetry in shapes. These

skills will help your child to understand that many shapes are related to one another

and that shapes can be sorted and given the same name, such as a set of

parallelograms or a set of triangles. Your child should begin to notice interesting

geometric designs in his or her world. You might talk to your child about how these

designs have been created. At the end of the chapter, your child will be using

knowledge of shapes to create geometric designs. Throughout the two weeks, you

and your child may engage in activities such as:

•  Your child can look for shape puzzles at home. Look in resources such as

newspapers and puzzle books. Your child could bring a puzzle to school to display

on a class bulletin board or puzzle table.

• Your child can find and list things around the house that have more than one line

of symmetry, and sketch at least 4 of these items and show the lines of symmetry.

• Your child could plan a symmetrical design for one wall of a bedroom or some

other room in the house. This might include the placement of pictures or posters

on the wall. Your child can draw a sketch of the symmetrical design, draw the line

of symmetry, and describe how the design was created.

• Your child can find something at home, such as a rug, a vase, or a bedspread, that

has an interesting geometric pattern. Have your child draw the pattern and describe

attributes such as congruent shapes, lines of symmetry, and colour. Your child should

then describe how the pattern was made. This is called the pattern rule. Your child

might take the real object or a drawing of the object to class to share with others.

You may want to visit

www.mathk8.nelson.com for more suggestions to help your child

learn mathematics and for books that relate children’s literature to 2-D geometry. Also

check the Web site for links to other sites that provide online tutorials, math problems,

and brainteasers.

If your child is using a

Mathematics 3 Workbook, pages 57–63 belong to Chapter 7.

There is a page of practice questions for each of the 6 lessons in the chapter and a

Test Yourself page at the end. If your child requires assistance, you can refer to the

At-Home Help box on each Workbook page.

Anti-Bullying Week at Abraar School

Assalamu Alaykum Dear Parents,

Islam says 'NO' to Bullying. The following Ayah is one of the proves in the Quran. Please discuss this issue with your children and make sure they understand that Bullying is WRONG!

49:11
Sahih International

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

Stop Bullying: Grade 3A will be doing some activities relating to anti-bullying, we ant to make our classroom and the school safe for every student.

Field Trip on November 13th, 2012

We will go to the Musuem of Science and Technology on November 13th. The students will participate two activities designed for grade 3 students in the curriculum day workshops. Below is the description of the activities which are part of the science curriculum for this grade. Grade 3A and 3B will go together, we have a total of 41 students and we need 3 parents to volunteer for this field trip. Please let me know if you are free on November 13th from 9:00am to noon.

CURRICULUM DAY WORKSHOPS

Curriculum Day workshops complement the Museum’s regular school programs by focusing on specific aspects of the school curriculum. Each workshop consists of a 15-minute introduction followed by 30 minutes of hands-on exploration.

Pushing and Pulling Forces:
Explore forces that cause movement, including magnetism, static electricity and gravity. Compare the strength of different forces. Find out which materials are magnetic and which are not. Discover the role friction plays in moving materials. Discover how different forces can be applied to an object to start, stop, or change its direction of movement.

Stability:
Build structures using different materials and determine the effect of shape on the strength of your materials. Test the ability of your construction and its components to support a load; learn about stability in our balancing game.

We will finish the plant unit in the next week or so and start the next unit; Spring Into Action which is about forces.

Scholastic Book Clubs

For those students who showed interest, I sent the flyer with them. Please make sure you make your order by next Tuesday. Below is information about the books that Teacher Nancy, our Librarian recomends.
Gr. 2-3(November flyer)

· #1 (Geronimo Stilton #51) : The Enormouse Pearl Heist and #2 Geronimo Stilton Mini-Mysteries Pack: No home library would be complete without this mouse. Still very much a favorite among the students.

· #51 Nate the Great and the Phony Clue by Marjorie Weinman: This early chapter book will be a favorite for the little sleuth in your family.

· #70 What Do You Do With a Tail Like This?by Steve Jenkins: Did you ever wonder if a new lizard's tail will grow back if it breaks off? Do you know where to find crickets' ears? If your child wants to know the facts about these and other animals, this book is for you.

· #83 Chester Pack: Chester is a one-of-a-kind cat and quite the trouble-maker, too. These three books are excellent and funny. Your child will want to read them over and over again.

We have finished half of the chapter on Numeration and we will have a quiz next week.
I will give the students a review sheet, please make sure you practice with them.

Helpful Website: Please sign up for this website to help your child with math

I will recommend that all parents sign up for the website www.ixl.com. This is a very good website to practice the skills that the students are learning in grade 3. I took the students to the computer lab today and they practiced on this website. It costs about $10/month. For this quiz the students can practice sections B1 to B9 (under place value), A1, A8, A9 and A10 (under numbering and comparing).

Today's Updates

Islamic Studies

So far we have covered the following pillars of Iman: Believe in Allah, Believe in Allah's Angels, Believe in Allah's Books, Believe in Allah's Messengers and Believe in the Day of Judgement.

The students received their Islamic Studies Workbooks and I have assigned page 1 to 10 as a homework to be completed for next Tuesday, October 9, 2012. These pages are easy and each page shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

Please make sure the children do this home work and also that they know the 6 pillars of Iman.

Arabic for Non-Speakers

Teacher Mohamed asked the non speakers to do page 59 of their book. Students should join the letters to make words and practice reading.

Math

We are working on chapter 2, Numeration. We talked about representing, renaming and regrouping numbers. Today, we covered Place Value Pattern and I assigned page 11 of the workbook as a home work.

Science

We covered 'how plants provide energy for animals'. Students watched a video on the food chain and will complete a worksheet tomorrow in class insha Allah.

Welcome

Dear Parents,

I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am very happy to have your child in my classroom. I have just completed my Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa and got certified. Prior to that I got a Bachelor of Science from the University of Ottawa and a Masters from Johns Hopkins University. I chose to teach because I love children and I love to see them grow emotionally, academically and socially.

I believe that by all of us working together we can make this a very successful year. I consider it of prime importance that you be an active part of your child's education.

It is important that you and your child be informed of my standards of classroom behavior so everyone knows what is expected. I have always found parents to be very supportive of good classroom behavior so their child has a good environment for maximum learning. I am attaching a copy of our classroom rules. If your child develops any difficulty conforming to the rules, I will notify you. As well, I hope that you will advise me if at any time your child has a problem, academic, social, or emotional. Should your child become discouraged or fearful about school, please communicate with me so that we can discover the cause of the problem.

Also note that if you ever have any comments, questions or concerns, I am available for meetings (by appointment please) each day before and after school. To schedule a meeting, you may contact me via my school email.

I will be using the blog for parent communication, so make sure you check the blog frequently.

I am excited about working with your child. I welcome questions or comments, and am looking forward to a great year!

Please feel free to contact me if you need anything else

Social studies : we studied how the aboriginal people helped the pioneers . Pictures were available on my storyboard for new words (like scurvy-kernel-fertilizer-juniper-trade-deerskin-craft-toboggans) and group work was set up to complete charts with information in printed texts.Students who finished early made drawings on their charts demonstrating understanding of the topic.
