Chapter 10

Dear Parents,

Over the next 2 weeks your child will be learning about the concept of division. He or she  will be learning division facts up to and including
49÷7 and seeing the connection between multiplication and division. The goal will be for your child either to recall the division fact or apply a strategy to find the answer. Your child will use these facts, along with a variety of strategies, to solve real-life problems.
Throughout this time, you and your child can do some activities such as:
Your child can look for things that come in groups of 2s, 3s and 4s( such as rolls of hockey tape, bags of milk, and so on)
Your child can begin to calculate how to share things equally within a group of people. For example, If I had 12 stickers to share with 3 friends, how many stickers could we each have?
Your child could find objects that come in arrays ( such as muffins in a box or eggs in a carton). This would assist in connecting the multiplication and division fact families.

Workbook pages 77 to 83 belongs to this chapter.

Update on Math

Assalam Alaikum Dear Parents,

Students have been learning about multiplication, using skip counting and repeated addition to develop an understanding of the multiplication facts up to 7 x 7.

It is important for students to know what it means to group items before they start memorize the multiplication facts. Once the child has an understanding, he or she will learn strategies to begin memorizing the facts. Through past weeks we have used concrete examples, watched movies,  grouped item, solved problems with number line and arrays. Now is the time you should expect your child starting to solve everyday problems with multiplication.

Student workbook p#70-76 belong to this chapter. Please review!
You may also check www.mathk8.nelson.com for more activities.

Weekend practice selected  EQAO questions
Monday, April 22nd Multiplication Chapter test.
Thursday, April 25th Science mid-chapter quiz.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Problem Solving Talk

Assalam Alaikum Dear Parents,

Below are some information on mathematical problem solving that students need to master at young age. Most of the time our brain does all of these without a conscious thought simultaneously, however, when a child is having difficulties while solving a story problem it is good to go through the steps one at a time. Guide your child to the solution by asking questions  , let them talk MATH:)

6 STAGES OF THE PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS ( kids never spent enough time here, they do not know how:) Start them by  asking them to define the problem with their own words)

  1. Define the problem
  2. Brainstorm possible solutions
  3. Evaluate and prioritize the possible solutions
  4. Choose the best solution
  5. Determine how to implement the solution
  6. Assess how well solution solved the problem

7 APPROACHES TO PROBLEM SOLVING ( students need to learn how to choose the best approach, this will come by only with practice and  solving problems frequently. As they get exposed to many different kind of problems and their solutions,  students will realize certain problems are easier to be solved by approaching them in a certain way )

  1. Guess and check
  2. Find a pattern
  3. Use a systematic list (charts & tables)
  4. Use a drawing or a model
  5. Eliminate possibilities
  6. Work backwards
  7. Use a similar, simpler problem

5 STEPS TO PROBLEM SOLVING

  1. Read and understand the problem
  2. Organize the information
  3. Determine the operations needed, establish equation
  4. Solve and check answer
  5. State and label your answer

April Update

Dear Parents,
Here is what we will be doing in Science and Math classes this month.

Science: April would be so much fun with Spring at our doors. Grade 3's will be planting their own seeds next week in April 10-11, having walks around the schoolyard exploring and observing the soil, listing the living and non-living things. Students will have  worksheets to be completed in the class and kept on their science folders and used as reference all through the unit. Please check their classwork. There is an ongoing assessment and evaluations done in the classrooms using the in-class assignments, lab work and students work. You may observe your child's progress through their science folders.

Math: We are finished with  Chapter 8 Area and Grids . Students explored area and calculated area using shape blocks, and grid paper. Chapter test includes workbook pages # 64-69
Chapter 8 Test is  in on Monday, April 8th.
Chapter 8 project : Design your own backyard using a cm grid paper due on Tuesday , April 9th.. Detailed instructions given in the class.
An additional chapter 8 task  will also be given on Monday due the following week Tuesday April 16th insha Allah.
From next week on, we will start Chapter 9 and practice multiplication , word problems and EQAO examples.

Best Regards,

Teacher Hanife

Thank you!

Our Qur'an Party was a success  . Special thanks to Sr. Madeline for volunteering her time and giving the grade threes a wonderful game of trivia with 40 min. of Art class. Students created gift bags then earned gifts by answering knowledge questions and filled their bags .
A very big thank you to our parents for contributing time and effort and sending in delicious food .

Jazaki Allah Khairan!
