Problem Solving Talk

Assalam Alaikum Dear Parents,

Below are some information on mathematical problem solving that students need to master at young age. Most of the time our brain does all of these without a conscious thought simultaneously, however, when a child is having difficulties while solving a story problem it is good to go through the steps one at a time. Guide your child to the solution by asking questions  , let them talk MATH:)

6 STAGES OF THE PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS ( kids never spent enough time here, they do not know how:) Start them by  asking them to define the problem with their own words)

  1. Define the problem
  2. Brainstorm possible solutions
  3. Evaluate and prioritize the possible solutions
  4. Choose the best solution
  5. Determine how to implement the solution
  6. Assess how well solution solved the problem

7 APPROACHES TO PROBLEM SOLVING ( students need to learn how to choose the best approach, this will come by only with practice and  solving problems frequently. As they get exposed to many different kind of problems and their solutions,  students will realize certain problems are easier to be solved by approaching them in a certain way )

  1. Guess and check
  2. Find a pattern
  3. Use a systematic list (charts & tables)
  4. Use a drawing or a model
  5. Eliminate possibilities
  6. Work backwards
  7. Use a similar, simpler problem

5 STEPS TO PROBLEM SOLVING

  1. Read and understand the problem
  2. Organize the information
  3. Determine the operations needed, establish equation
  4. Solve and check answer
  5. State and label your answer
